Hi, I’m Grace. I’m a commercial beauty photographer in Brisbane, and I got here a slightly roundabout way.

Photography came first. Then I trained and worked as a makeup artist, because I kept wanting to understand what I was photographing from the inside.

That means how skin actually behaves under light, how product sits, and what a finish really looks like once the strobes are on.

That background is the useful part. When a makeup artist or hair stylist is working towards something, I usually know what it is, so I can light and frame it to show it off rather than fight it. I also know when something’s quicker to fix on set than in retouching. And when it does come to retouching, I do that too: skin, makeup, hair and product, finished cleanly but with the texture left in so it still looks like a real person.
